My Summer Reading: Part I

In the past month I have read three full books cover to cover, which for some people is probably no big deal. For me though, the last time that I accomplished this was in high school, so I am pretty damn proud.

As a kid, I read so much that it actually got me in trouble. Teachers would write home to my parents that I was "extremely smart and lovely" but that I keep reading in class instead of paying attention and it needed to be addressed. I also loved to use reading as an excuse for not doing my chores, and it would infuriate my mother. She didn't like yelling at me for reading, but also, I needed to clean my damn room. Once I even got in so much trouble that my dad took the entire Harry Potter series away from me and hid it for a week. I cried.

So, now that I've graduated I've taken my excess of free time to get back into reading and it's been lovely.

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/96/Death_on_the_Nile_First_Edition_Cover_1937.jpgYes, this is a kids book. But it was perfect for my travel to Washington last month. I always loved mystery books as a kid, and this was one that I had bought but never got around to reading. I snagged it off my bookshelf at my parents house before leaving and it was a nice quick read for the bus ride and flight. My only complaint is that there were so many different names to keep track of that it got a little confusing. Definitely recommend for anyone who needs a quick read.

Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
Another murder mystery but hey, they're my favorite genre (I was a Nancy Drew kid). It was kind of frustrating that no one died until basically half way through the book but it was worth it at the end. I never understand how Agatha Christie always managed to make the murderers impossible to find out, even with all of the proof right there in front of you. I'd make a bad detective.

After finishing up the two mystery novels I wanted to read something non-fiction and related to my recent adultness. I felt that there was no one better to make me laugh while simultaneously feeling nostalgic than Mindy Kaling. I ended up reading the entire book in one day. A wonderful easy read to check off my 20-something reading list.
