Weekend Getaways: Ocean City, MD

First of all, I need to apologize for disappearing from this blog for almost two weeks. My laptop broke and since I don't exactly have the money to buy a new one right now I had to wait for my dad to fix up my brother's old one and send it back to me. But now I'm here, and I'm back, and I promise that I will be back to a normal schedule.

I'm starting a new series called "Weekend Getaways" because, to be honest, I don't travel far away very often. Most of my "travel" is within  a few hours from home. And I think that most people do the same. So I figured I'd bring you guys some details from my favorite little weekend getaways that I've had.

Back on the east coast beaches seem to be everywhere. On Long Island you're never more than 20 minutes from a shore. A twenty minute boat ride past the south shore of long island, is Fire Island, which is entirely beaches. If for some reason you want to go a little farther away, there's the entire Jersey Shore, which, although it comes pretty close to its stereotype, can be a pretty neat place. But in Delaware if you want to go to the beach, you drive down the peninsula to "the beaches": Rehoboth, Bethany, Dewey, and Ocean City Maryland.

Every year Teddy and I go to Ocean City two times, once for his fraternity formal with all of our friends, and once at the end of the summer with his family. This year, we're missing his family trip due to being in Washington, so we're starting to plan a trip down to meet with all of our friends that we haven't seen graduation once we get back.

Ocean City has a boardwalk, but I have never even been there. We usually stay pretty far north (Ocean City has over 100 blocks, and the boardwalk is at the south end) where it is less crowded. The beaches are pretty nice for the mid-Atlantic, but I'm not going to lie and tell you that the water is crystal clear. Especially at the north end the vibes are nice. There's not a ton of cops patrolling which means that you can generally have a couple of drinks on the beach and no one is bothered.

In addition to the beach itself though, Ocean City is a great town. First and foremost, Ocean City has the most fantastic beach-front bar called Seacrets. The tables go right into the water and the drinks are delicious (& cheap!). Last time we went pina coladas were $5 which is enough in itself to make me a repeat customer. Additionally, the bus system in Ocean City is really good, which always makes me happier when coming home from the bar.

Seacrets also has this wonderfully classy hotdog cart out on the beach.
Teddy's family also has their own Ocean City traditions that I have taken part in over the past few summers. They swear by some of their favorite restaurants, including Cottage Cafe and BJ's on the Bay. Cottage Cafe has the greatest little muffins as a starter and it's always an argument about which ones are the best (I like the corn and Teddy likes the cranberry and coconut). BJ's on the Bay has great seafood (duh) and great outdoor seating on the water with swings as table benches.

There's also a huge Tanger outlets right over the Delaware border and we always spend at least half a day there. Teddy loves the Vineyard Vines and Jos A. Banks deals while I prefer the local thrift stores and kitschy beach stores in town. I actually got my favorite Smokey the Bear poster at a thrift store in Ocean City the first time I went with his family! We also always have a great time playing minigolf (or putt-putt as Teddy's family calls it). We always go to one place that gives out free ice cream with every game, which is always a good way to distract sore losers.

I honestly can't put into words how much I love Ocean City, so I am more than excited to be planning a reunion with all of my friends there at the end of the month. Let me know in the comments if you'll want another Weekend Getaways post with some updated information when I go!

My name is Liz and I'm a 22 year old with a B.S. in Wildlife Conservation. I love beer and fashion and exploring the outdoors, and am currently figuring out how to do all of the above on a post-grad budget.
